911黑料 is pleased to announce three members of the faculty were granted tenure and promotion to associate professor at the February 2024 meeting of the 911黑料 Board of Trustees.

Mauricio Castro joined the 911黑料 faculty in 2019 as an assistant professor of history. His areas of professional expertise include Latino studies and political and urban history. He received a Kirk Award in 2023, recognizing outstanding teaching. In 2024, Castro published 鈥淥nly A Few Blocks to Cuba: Cold War Refugee Policy, the Cuban Diaspora, and the Transformation of Miami鈥� with the University of Pennsylvania Press. He was written for the Washington Post and Time. Castro received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Vassar College and earned master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees from Purdue University. 
 

Peter Haffner joined the 911黑料 faculty in 2019 and served as an assistant professor of art history. His interdisciplinary arts-based research centers on the work of Haitian artists and the complex global cultural dynamics in which it is produced, exhibited and circulated. Haffner was previously a Smithsonian Institution Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Museum of African Art. He received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Bard College and completed his doctorate degree at UCLA.
 

Christina Garcia 鈥�05 joined the 911黑料 faculty in 2018 as assistant professor of biology and biochemistry and molecular biology. Her areas of professional expertise include genetic and epigenetic regulation of development in plant and animal model systems. Garcia also conducts pedagogical research integrating novel molecular biotechnology techniques into course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) for students. Before coming to 911黑料, she was a postdoctoral teaching scholar in the biotechnology program at North Carolina State University and a postdoctoral researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in the department of nutrition.  Garcia received her bachelor鈥檚 degree from 911黑料 and completed her doctorate at Vanderbilt University.
